Shorts And Tights Is The One Noughties Trend I Can’t Get Behind

It’s 2009, and I’m working an after-school shift at a vintage shop on Brick Lane. “That’s Not My Name” by the Ting Tings blasts through the speakers. Free copies of VICE magazine pile up by the entrance. Denim booty riders—everywhere—so many that you can’t see beyond them. They’re being yanked off the rails in a chaotic flurry, metal hangers clattering to the floor. Oh, and of course, I’m wearing denim booty riders too. Paired with 15-denier tights, purposefully ripped, and some random “vintage shoes.” It’s 2009, and everyone is rocking shorts and tights.

Looking back, it feels like I squeezed into a pair of shorts and tights in the late 2000s and didn’t take them off until, like, 2013. Which is strange, because they were so uncomfortable. I was constantly itchy—those layers rubbing together—and it only got worse when I paired them with thick socks and Dr. Martens boots. Visually, it was a lot. If you wanted to witness one of my more questionable outfits, all you had to do was hop on the 55 bus at 1am. There, you’d find me with a Tyskie in hand, wearing galaxy print shorts, fishnets with stars, and heading to the club—underage, of course.

But that was then, and this is now. I was sure that, among the extended Noughties revival, the shorts and tights combo had somehow been left behind. And for the best, I thought to myself, quietly tucking them away with plastic beaded necklaces and pleather jeggings. I can get behind many divisive Noughties trends—I’ve even defended them on this very website—but shorts and tights? That’s where I draw the line. Besides, if we embrace shorts and tights in an “indie sleaze” way, we’re just a few inches away from accepting them in the equally popular “smart casual brown boots and a fitted waistcoat” way. And that, I cannot accept.

But, as with so much in life, I can’t stop the tides of change, and shorts and tights are already making their way into celebrity paparazzi shots and street style circles. Suki Waterhouse, whom we can all agree is effortlessly stylish, was spotted earlier this week in denim shorts and black tights—like someone on her way to an American Apparel sale. Alessandra Ambrosio has been seen strutting through New York in leather shorts and tights, exuding the confidence of someone who can pull off anything—even this. Alexa Chung, who famously wore the combo the first time around, has now started rocking it again. And who am I to argue with Alexa Chung? Honestly, I may not like them, but I don’t like the rain either—and I can’t stop the clouds from gathering.

Still, none of us have to follow trends. Maybe you love shorts and tights. Maybe you’re 19 and don’t even remember a time before people wore shorts, tights, and high-top trainers with slightly crooked caps. Perhaps you think they’re the perfect transition from winter to spring. Or maybe, like me, you find the combo a bit triggering. Maybe you look at them and hear the opening chords of TiK ToK by Ke$ha, back when she was still Ke$ha. Maybe you can already feel the heat rash that comes from wearing skin-tight nylon tights with Topshop-style knicker shorts. And if that’s the case? Maybe it’s best to sit this one out—just like I should have done the first time.

Sydney Sweeney looked stunning in the fashion world’s latest trend: the navy and black color combo. The 27-year-old actress was spotted with co-star Brandon Sklenar, 34, on their way to watch Cult of Love on Broadway.

Suki Waterhouse styled sheer tights under jorts and the results are peak 2000s It-Girl

When Suki Waterhouse isn’t performing on stage in fluffy coats and custom boho Chloé dresses, she’s often seen in more understated outfits with a similar chic vibe

While out in New York on Monday, the singer, songwriter, and actress showcased a bold fashion choice that perfectly highlighted her style. Fans of 2000s fashion are absolutely obsessed!

For her chic city outing, Suki styled sheer black tights with denim mini shorts, paired them with a cozy camel brown knit jumper, and topped it all off with an ultra-fluffy coat.

Channeling the eclectic 70s vibe of her on-screen character Karen Sirko from Amazon Prime’s hit series Daisy Jones & The Six, Suki embraced bold accessories. She completed her look with patent black cowboy boots, a black shoulder bag, vintage-inspired slim sunglasses, and classic wired Apple headphones.

We’re obsessed with the mismatched combo! Tights under shorts made a major comeback in 2024, paired with micro-minis, knickers, and hot pants, as seen on stars like Sydney Sweeney, Kendall Jenner, and Emma Corrin. As for jorts, they hadn’t returned—until now!

If you were a dedicated Tumblr user in the mid-2000s, Suki’s look might feel nostalgic. This style was a favorite of stars like Emma Roberts, Miley Cyrus, and Rachel McAdams, as well as popular bloggers like Zoe Sugg and Tanya Burr.

Watch this space for spring…

Pamela Anderson Just Brought Back the Tights Trend We Thought We Left in the 1980s

As a fashion writer, it’s essential to stay updated on celebrity trends. After all, keeping up with these styles is a key part of the job!

Every day, I carefully review the latest celebrity outfits to find the most newsworthy styles. By spending so much time analyzing their looks, I’ve created a personal shortlist of stars who always get it right. One recent addition to this list is actor Pamela Anderson. Her refined and polished silhouettes, paired with subtle nods to current trends, never fail to grab my attention.

This week, during the press tour for her latest film, The Last Showgirl, she showcased a series of stunning outfits that perfectly embodied her effortless take on elevated dressing. While her chic monochromatic looks stood out, it was a subtle yet striking accessory trend in two of her outfits that truly caught my eye: 10-denier sheer tights.

This hosiery trend, which rose to fame in the 1980s, was a natural fit for the decade’s polished, professional aesthetic. Paired with power suits, pencil skirts, and structured dresses, 10-denier tights were the final touch that made every outfit feel effortlessly refined. However, after its peak in the ’80s, the trend began to decline in the late ’90s and early 2000s as fashion shifted. While the 2010s embraced patterned and nude hosiery, black semi-sheer tights mostly faded into the background.

While 10-denier tights have never truly gone “out,” their resurgence stands out after a season filled with thicker, colorful, and patterned styles. Their delicate semi-sheer finish adds a touch of understated sophistication to any outfit. However, their low denier makes them more prone to snags, so investing in a high-quality pair is crucial to avoid mishaps and keep them in top condition. By pairing hers with all-black ensembles, Anderson’s minimalist styling allowed this quietly elegant accessory to shine even more.

1. The Trend: Sized Up and Structured Bags
The Location: Spain

Style Notes:This year, brands like The Row and Ferragamo are doubling down on oversized bags, proving that bigger is better. In Spain, it’s common to see women swapping classic crossbody bags for stylish, roomy totes. If your bag is spacious enough for all your essentials and sturdy enough for top handles, you’ve found a guaranteed winner!

2. The Trend: 90’s Knee Skirts
The Location: France

Style Notes:Tired of maxis but too chilly for minis? No worries! Parisians are embracing a ’90s-inspired silhouette with simple, knee-length skirts reminiscent of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Courteney Cox. Perfect for now, pair them with a cozy knit and tights. This mid-length skirt strikes the ideal balance between showing some skin and staying classy—a must-have for French women.

3. The Trend: Masculine Suiting
The Location: Denmark

Style Notes:Scandinavian brands like Filippa K, House of Dagmar, and Toteme are known for their effortlessly polished, minimalist style. What’s more timeless than a tailored suit, complete with a chic tie for added elegance? While Jeanette’s look channels Copenhagen Fashion Week more than Croydon High Street, it’s easy to adapt. For a wearable, everyday outfit, opt for wide-leg trousers, boxy blazers, and oversized shirts. Simple, stylish, and undeniably Scandi!

4. The Trend: Sherpa Boots
The Location: France

Style Notes: Here’s a trend you might not have predicted—unless you’re in Paris: the sherpa boot. Cute, cozy, and incredibly comfy, it’s the perfect mix of fashion and function. This shearling-lined boot is a winter 2024 must-have and will stay stylish well into the new year. Pair it with jeans or sweats for a laid-back look, or dress it up with a short skirt or dress come spring. Adorable, right?

5. The Trend: Pinstripes
The Location: Norway

Style Notes:Business suits are making a stylish comeback! Once you’ve rocked a full suit on the streets of Copenhagen or Oslo, mix and match the pieces for fresh looks. Pair the blazer or trousers with cozy knits and camel coats to keep the professional pinstripe vibe going. For a cool-girl twist on corporate chic, opt for pointed-toe shoes or boots and balance it out with a casual touch on top. Effortlessly polished, wherever you go!

6: The Trend: Brown Cont.
The Location: Bulgaria

Style Notes:There’s nothing like watching a trend evolve into a full-fledged classic, and chocolate brown is doing just that. What started as a microtrend in 2024 has now become a major style staple. Social media’s best-dressed are now embracing head-to-toe brown outfits for a luxe look that checks all the boxes. For extra style points, mix textures like suede, leather, cashmere, and silk to elevate the look even further.

7: The Trend: Statement Tights
The Location: London

Style Notes:If there’s one thing London girls can agree on right now, it’s that a fun pair of tights can completely transform an outfit. Luckily, Swedish Stockings, Falke, and Calzedonia have dropped some fantastic styles to make it easier than ever. Throughout the party season, expect classic fishnets and lace, along with pops of red and merlot. But for 2025, our big predictions are white, ecru, pastels, and—of course—a bit more dark brown.

Chloë Sevigny’s wildly pattern tights offer fashion inspiration to this day, almost 30 years later

Pictures often say more than words. While it may sound cliché, it’s true. Over the years, countless articles have analyzed Chloë Sevigny’s effortlessly trend-setting style. For fans of downtown New York fashion, one iconic moment stands out: a young Sevigny at the 1996 premiere of Trees Lounge at Sony Village 7 Theatre, rocking animal-print tights.

That evening, the young actor dazzled in a sparkly black one-shoulder dress paired with a small floral boutonniere and open-toed heels. The highlight of her outfit? Her bold tiger-patterned tights. Known for clashing patterns and colors with ease, Sevigny always makes it look effortlessly cool. With natural makeup and a boyish bob, she proved once again that less truly is more.

It’s tough to call this ’90s minimalism, given the black shimmery dress paired with tiger-striped tights. However, it’s a perfect example of how great style comes from a strong personal sense of fashion. In the 1990s, Sevigny was known as a thrifting queen, setting trends by transforming discount shop finds into must-have pieces. This look captures that vibe—unpolished yet authentic, showcasing her unique ability to march to the beat of her own drum.

Colorful and leopard-print tights are back in style, dominating both street fashion and the runway. Brands like Gucci and Miu Miu have led the charge, with Sevigny herself serving as both a fan and a campaign face for Miu Miu. There’s no better time to embrace the bold tiger-stripe trend.

Why a pair of tights will be the hardest-working item of your wardrobe for winter

From stylish haute couture to comfy wool winter tights, the right pair will be your best friend this season. Stay warm and fashionable every day!

The easiest and most stylish way to tackle winter outfits? Tights. When temperatures fall, tights are a smarter choice than facing the cold with bare legs. Plus, with the influence of celebrities and designers, tights have moved beyond practicality to become bold fashion statements.

Take Jenna Ortega, for example. She turned heads in crimson Calzedonia tights paired with bold red lacquered platforms during the Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice press tour. Her look proves that tights can be both edgy and chic.

Lady Gaga took it to the next level with lacy tights and a dramatic ruff collar on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Meanwhile, Kaia Gerber brought fun to her LBD with polka-dot tights, instantly elevating her outfit.

For autumn/winter 2024, designers like Bora Aksu and Vivetta added a playful, romantic vibe to tights with lace, ribbons, and bows. At the same time, Isabel Marant, Blumarine, and Zimmermann went bold with luxe leopard prints, transforming tights into statement pieces. These high-fashion designs are made to stand out – loud and proud.

How do you style tights for everyday wear? Not everyone is on a press tour or walking the runway. For an easy yet eye-catching look, try pairing shiny or colorful tights with something sparkly or sequined, like Abigale. This combo guarantees you’ll turn heads!
